I think there might also be a little cultural machismo going on. “I’ll protect my flock and trap and kill them predators!” is seen as acceptable male behavior, but cuddling chickens is somehow less masculine? I’ve never been great at following gender norms... and see kindness and love for animals as a strength in anyone, regardless of gender. It’s one of those things we need to fix in society, like the beauty/body image Pressures that are so accepted that no one stops to consider how it is conditioning is to think as a society, or the heath affects on young girls.

I agree with you 100%. I feel grateful my almost 17-year-old daughter totally gets this. “Misogeny” and “social construct” are some of her most common words.

No worries, I go by both! Most people screw up the “ten” part and I get Kristine, Christie, Krista, Christian, Kristan, Kirstan, Kristin, etc... so I usually just go by Kris. Worst thing I’ve gotten, and this is a recent development, is getting Kristin Campbell! Or Mrs Campbell... that will not do on a cheque for me at all . I may say DH here for simplicity, but I usually refer to Andrew in person as my Partner, Spouse, or Ball and Chain! I will not be taking his last name, sorry, not sorry! Campbell...

Edit to clarify: I’m of Scottish descent, and although I have to agree with DH that the earl of Argyll was not really behaving as treacherously as portrayed, there was a little thing called the Massacre of Glencoe, that besmirched the Campbell name a tad. Massacre of less than 40 people mind you, and done under orders, but hey do we know how to hold a grudge!

Yep. People get so confused when I say: yes, we are married; no we do not have the same surname. It's great for telemarketers because I don't have to lie: No Mrs So~&~So does not live here. I don't tell them that would be my MIL & she's dead!

That is very kind of you to say. Sometimes I think I share more than I should on this website but it just slips out. Right now I am living in fear that I am going to be pulled into court over something. My heart sank Wednesday afternoon when the election bureau showed up on my phone. Fortunately, it was just someone thought they might have left their drivers license at the polls. I will be so glad when everything is done.

I have to decide whether to run for re-election next year. I have doing this for nearly 16 years now and right now I don’t know if I have the stomach to keep doing it. Posts Ike yours make me feel better about what I have been doing. It truly is much appreciated.

In PA, I don't know anything about NJ, there are 3 elected positions, a majority and minority inspector and the Judge of Elections who is responsible for everything that occurs. As the Judge, I am responsible for staffing the polls. It is my job to identify qualified people like yourself, train them, and then monitor everything which occurs. I also deal with any problems that should arrive. This past time I had to deal with over 60 different individuals that had issues. I personally certify the results from my polling place and at the end of the night transport everything to election headquarters for processing.

Mrs BY Bob, one of my trained helpers, also provide food for everyone who is working. As a thank you for all the time and hard work they provide. I actually do not have a minority inspector. In 12 years no one has run for the position. I have to appoint one every election.

Thank you for doing that. My ambition was only to be a trained poll worker so probably that doesn't require an election. Once the temperature goes down I will enquire about how to enroll.
