:yesss: Juliet is still at the house. It was too late last night to take her to the storage unit so we will be heading off shortly. I'll let you know when it starts and ends here. That should give you some advance notice.

Stay warm!
You too. It is already frigid here. I keep meaning to ask what heated waterer you use and if you like it. I am getting a bit fed up of heading out with a pitcher of warm water to make holes in the ice for the Princesses to drink through!

That low transport crate is exactly what I borrowed (yellow though). One opening, on a spring at the top. Then I have just one 36" dog crate. I can fit both in my car.
If I have to keep them overnight I do still have the shell of my indoor 30"x48"x 48" tall brooder set up, theoretically, maybe 8 hens and the 1 rooster could roost in there on two 2x4's, it is in a bathroom with a door. I could put a sheet or blanket around it to simulate a real wall. It is itself not very secure as far as containing them - just porch screening on lathe sticks on a cut-down big bicycle box - if someone wanted to bust out of it, they could. Attached is a picture - there's a couple of chicks visible in there. (If you're wondering I rigged the green hanging tomato bag to hold the nipple waterer.) Hey I have a couple more for the chicken tax!

Thank you for the heads up - says it will start here in an hour but not get serious until 3pm. I am so grateful for you posting that picture because I realize you will understand why it took me until midnight last night to clear enough space in the garage to fit in the car (and then another hour at 5am). I feel so much better about myself.
My problem is that now I have piled everything up (right to the ceiling) to fit in the car, I will never again be able to find anything! :lau

Some Purple Corn before the Storm

I thought I'd give the ladies a warm up this morning. It's cold out without wind for the first time this winter.

Aurora is still molting badly and Sansa has started as well. Sansa does have bare spots on her bum but it looks like she can still cover it. I'm worried for Aurora and I'm going to keep an eye on her for signs she is too cold.
What would be a sign that she is getting too cold? Wouldn't she hide it? Crouching down and not moving, trying to fluff up what she has left? It is sooo cold, it was 8F this morning here!

Yes, I could do with knowing that too - getting to similar temperature tonight and already the Princesses are so fluffed up they are almost spherical!

30x48” should be doable for overnight... yes it doesn’t meet the “proper” space requirements but I literally had 11 hens and 3 roosters roosting together in the space of a pallet on three 2x2” roosts (just a little bigger space than your brooder) Done is better than perfect, and with those temperatures and young birds that might not have the knowledge to find a suitable place out in the wild to hole up in... I’d focus of getting them in and then worry about stowing them! Make sure you lay some old feed bags down under the crate in the car as well, getting chicken poop out of the automotive carpet is really hard!

Me Three! Don’t ask this Canadian about cold weather keeping... I don’t do cold. As soon as it dips below freezing here all bets are off. My waterers freeze up, the chickens refuse to leave their roosting boxes, I panic and start stuffing them in the barn. And the worst I’ve had here is -5C for a day or two or about 23F. I didn’t see any signs of the cold other than absolute disgust for the white stuff in their runs and a refusal to go outside.

So adorable. When I brought the ladies inside because of the blizzard in 2016 I just hung a sheet with thumbtacks to block off the hallway. There were no breakouts. You can see it behind my improvised roosting system. I don't think you will need to worry about breakouts.

Juliette is MUCH smaller than Giana. I realized this as I pulled Giana in last night. I let the stuff creep into the garage that does not belong there. It got much tighter. 🤣

A little over 1 hour and not much but it has cranked up now.
