A Moment

Phyllis had a moment yesterday where she was startled and started calling out. In fact it happened again today. Here is the video.

Ivy did that sometimes when she was wanting to sit down again but was torn between sitting and doing other things. the urge to sit always won in the end!

So I’ve just observed Belle grabbing at Snows big dangly wattles 🤔 Snow just stood there and let it happen then went in to lay her egg.
Is this a dominance strategy from Belle? I’m not convinced she’s laying yet, only get an egg every 2-3 days and never 2 on the one day. Maybe she’s about to begin.
Today is the one day I have to go into work until lunch, I’ll check on them when I get home.
They are let out for half a day everyday, maybe the new feeder is causing issues.
Anyway...
Hmmmm I have not seen that before 🤔

Your hens are quite lovely. My hens take mostly care of themselves grooming wise. Occasionally we have to clean a butt. Outside of that they groom and care for their feathers themselves.

Since yours are loaner chickens I wonder if they might be a little stressed being moved about. Stress can cause feathers to be more rumpled as grooming can drop off.

Your red hen does seem a little rumpled in that picture, almost like she is going through a molt. Are you finding feathers strewn about at all?
My Red is indeed rumpled! She’s been like that from day one. This is the first time that this farm has had a rent a hen program, and while I think it’s a neat idea in theory, now that I know more about hens I don’t think it’s fair to them, to be honest. The owners are really nice yet farm animals are just farm animals to them. They make sure they have the necessities and even free range their birds, I don’t think they are to in depth with chicken phycology! As I have discovered, chickens HATE change.

That is why I haven’t taken them up on changing out two of them for ones that will produce more eggs. They are all used to me and their flock now, I don’t care if they are free-loading.

Here's Peggy's fluffy butt for Friday 😁

Aww so soft n fluffy 💕

Could it have been grooming behavior or was she grabbing and holding?
