Yes! If you raise them with some chicks, they are much more likely to be protective of your chickens. Raised separately, not so much. I sooo want geese.....but still working on Hubby (he is petrified of them!)
They can be intimidating. Particularly en masse.

That's a great name for her!!

I had a feeling you might opt for cross bred chicks :gig
Bella has totally taken up residence in my heart - she is such a quirky little soul! She runs back and forth flapping and then dives head first into the food.
Two more to go once their names are clear.
I was hoping to take them all on an outdoor outing but with snow on the ground I will wait a few more days.

He's a man, he needs to be taken under your wing, and gently smacked up the side of the head ☺️.

Life is all about learning, and the best leassons learnt are those from the school of hard knocks.
Hahaha I just realized what I wrote 😆

By hard knocks I mean hard lessons (not knocks up the side of the head teeheehee)!

Awww 🤗

Shame about the snow.

Yes he was pretty, and I could pick him up and hand feed him. But he was unpredictable... And too hard on my wee Silkies.
I'm sorry about your boys but I totally understand the situation. I'm just going to play devils advocate here. It seemed you sorta liked for the most part having a rooster around. Have you thought about finding a silkie rooster or some other bantam rooster that needs a good home? A smaller boy would be easier on your girls. My best boy when it comes to watching the sky for hawks is actually Branch. The bigger boys keep a eye out for dogs and other things but ignore the sky.

A formal introduction: Bella
Bella for beautiful or maybe for belladonna. My black cat is called Nightshade; maybe they will become friends.
She has pink toes at the end of her black legs and white flashes under her black wings. When she is grown I believe she will be all black.
She likes to stretch out her toes and flap her wings, but hasn’t yet learned to take off.
She is an absolute pig and eats all the time.
She is not a Jersey Giant or a black Orpington. Nor is she a Sapphire Gem (had to look that one up). Unfortunately a clean-legged Marans requires a major road trip to visit @RebeccaBoyd (maybe next year).
Bella is a cross between an Ameraucana and a Marans which I believe makes her an Olive Egger. Well done @bgmathteach!
Of course, that is all just what I believe - we will learn more as she grows. Meanwhile, please welcome Bella to our collective global tribe.

I love the name you chose for her. Enjoy those juvenile white wing feathers, by the time they are 8 weeks old they will most likely be gone. My marans get them and loose them by 8 to 10 weeks. One of the reasons I was hoping she was a Marans is she has Marans hatch down colors. Knowing her mix now, and knowing she is half Marans I'm going to say its is a pretty safe bet to say as a adult she will be black with at least partial copper hackle markings. Thinking she'll look somewhere between my Corona and Bob's Lilly.

That would make me very happy - but you know I will dote on her whatever she ends up looking like! I will also still dream about getting a Corona baby some day.
The little flashes of white from her wing feathers is particularly cute because she flaps so much - a lot more than the others who tend to jump more than flap.
:love

I've saw references to my grandma's love for my chickens. Yes she enjoys them. She's already spending several times a day cuddling my current group of hooligan's. Branch has been invited in to watch a little bit of tv with her. I'm going to have to invest in a chicken diaper for him I think. When it is warm outside she will sit on the porch and loves it when the girls come to visit. The girls are also loving it as it means more treats for them. I'm not going to be able to keep any of the chicks that I incubate, so when they are a few days old I'm going to let them go for 1 each. If it makes her happy and while its warm I will let her incubate several batches of chicks.
