It is so weird. It has been mainly above freezing and dipping into the high 20sF at night.
Today is similar but very windy.
Then after noon today the temperatures start dropping down to 0F. They revised the -4F up to 0F.
It will stay low for about 12 hours and then back to hovering just above freezing.
It is a crazy plummet.
I am worried about the chickens but also the house will get cold as it doesn’t respond that fast.
My plan is to feed the chickens hot mash mid afternoon and then put an oil filled heater in the servan’s quarters where they can’t tip it over.
Then before I go to bed I will move the oil filled heater out into the coop where it will be nearer Bernie and the heat will rise up to the rafters.
Then I will keep my fingers crossed.
I will move the heater back to the servant’s quarters before the Princesses wake up.
Wish us all luck!
Sounds like a plan. I think you'all will be fine. I will be sending warm and fuzzy thoughts 😊

OMG. They are hatching! I have 2 chicks. Hades is a daddy

Yay!!!

I don’t know what is worse. The pain of the wound operation area, or not being able to use the toilet !
Both battle it out. I could get up to go but oh what a production it was, especially early on before you somewhat get used to moving around on one leg.
Hello FBA ! Having another very warm and beautiful Friday here, and the chickens are really enjoying the sun as they were locked up yesterday for the bigger part of the day. And so I am- dozing in my lounge chair instead of spreading manure on the garden 🙂.

@TX Chick Noob I hope the power situation won't last throughout the week end. You don't need that on top of pain!

@Ponypoor if your priority really is autosexable chicks, and you don't want sex links, I think that should pretty much shorten your wish list. I hope you manage to keep up that incredible newfoundland spirit of yours looking for chicks breeds, it must not be easy being so far from home and still several weeks to spend on your project, and missing your lovely Sally.

I haven't forgotten Chaco Alex. I think often of her, I have told her story to my partner and my neighbors about why I changed my mind and won't get ponies. (No proper vet care here).

@knoturavggrl I'm thinking of you and waiting for your update 💚. How are you feeling today?

Here are three butts for all the talking.

I am well. My daughter (6yrs) took it better then expected, Powder was her favorite. She said she was glad we got chickens, I said are you sure since it can be sad sometimes. She paused and thought, her reply was yes I am sure, we had lots of good times too. So proud of her.

I am okay, I’ll feel guilty forever most likely but we are fixing it as I type this. Still no sign of her at all. I am pretty certain at this point something took her, probably an bird of prey.

You need to call and tell them you have a medical necessity. They also get priority during power restorations.
I would if I could even get through to someone. They claimed our grid was improved, but obviously not and they are totally overwhelmed. Here are current numbers for our provider (who is one of several in Texas so there are more people with issues than this):

Do they have an online or automated outage reporting system? I get a lot of outages here and I notice that you can indicate whether you have a medical emergency (you do) and whether you have a live downed wire on your property.
Supposedly they prioritize reports with either of those conditions.
That number of outages actually shouldn't overwhelm them - particularly as they had some warning - so I am hoping they get to you really soon!

Bielefelders are auto sexing. I'm getting some of those in May.

I love summer too. But not the mosquitos or flies. Or DH complaining about the heat.
I never complain about the heat - but last summer my poor chooks were having a hard time in the evening roosting - so I put a huge fan in their coop - I looked at getting a portable AC unit - but I think that would just cause more issues.... This summer I will put in some shades over the windows and plant green beans which will climb up the west and north walls of the Barn.

So very sorry about your lovely Powder - such a lovely girl. And yes your daughter is wonderful - what a perfect child - so wise to remind us to think of the fun times.

I wish I was as wise as your daughter!

It's good you are acting quickly on this , because if indeed a raptor took her it didn't wait long, and it's likely he will be back.
When I was feeling overwhelmed by guilt I tried telling myself that this feeling wasn't of any use to the bird that died, and that it was better to think of what to do differently in the future.
