And that right there, the hidden cache of eggs is how you are going to come home to Mr. P x Marty babies.
hahahaha wishful thinking but unless they are ok overnight for 10 hrs being cold don't think it's going to happen! Can you imagine my mum counting only 12 chickens she would have a conniption fit! That bird would be found!!!

OK for the enablers here this is the news:

Due to the fact that everywhere I was trying to check on getting chicks, was telling me they were 'sold out' - I went ahead and ordered from Performance Poultry back home. I was not able to get any Welbar nor Brabants. But I was able to get Bielefelder (5 pullets), and Dark Brahmas (5 pullets).

So on April 13/14 I will have 10 chicks to look forward to. The hatchery also told me that it was possible I could also get my hands on any extras hatched so maybe I might get some Welbars and Brabants or even Legbars :)

I have several that every few days decide the back corner under all the roosts is THE place to lay… and they don’t have the excuse of “new chickens” here. I think it’s the place the egg thieving human is the least likely to want to go for the deciding factor. I always kick the shavings/poop around to insure that “nest” when they do it. Climbing over or under all those roosts to get to the back corner is a total PITA!

Well, they just laid next to the brick this morning.:idunno BUT they had scratched the golf ball out from the space I curtained off under the nest box...which is more interest than they've ever shown before. I'll take that as a good sign. Decided to move two of their real eggs into that nest area, replacing the golf ball too, and at least Sheba saw me do it. We get 2-3 eggs a day from these three girls for the two of us, so that's way more than we need. :fl

I'm happy that you will be getting babies this year. I do have to make a plea though. If Marty goes broody while you are home you should think about letting her hatch just 2 of her own eggs. You should not let my roo to hen ratio scare you away. With the added 10 new chicks if one of them turned out to be a boy it would not be the worst thing imaginable. This time around you have a stable older roo who would be there to keep his son in line. With these new chicks coming will that not push your flock to over 15? That is plenty of girls to go around for 2 boys and honestly a 2nd one at that time would serve Mr. P well in help for keeping a lookout for predators. I have 3 boys for my flock and they all work together. Bubba and Twig handle the escort calls from the hens and keep a lookout. Branch guards the mothers, chicks and his 2 cochin girl friends. With my flock size I can see just 2 or even 1 boy for that matter becoming overwhelmed.

Dakota status is: she’s awake and she went straight to the feed bowl , but she’s moving slower than usual.

Sounds wonderful.
I was thinking of a similar timing to try and add some chicks.
Maybe a bit later - I have to sort out travel plans so I don’t have to leave on any trips while they are small.
