Who is BLU? And Canna? I don't think that I've ever heard you talk about them since I've been here.
My old feathered friends. First time I started raising chooks. I had BEN my original rooster buddy, BLU 1 and 2 and two of each other breed available to me at the time. ( female )

It was just so shocking I have never seen him act so aggressive! Oh he pecked that chick that time but it was one of those normal chicken pecks.

This was a jump on Rico and grab him by the back pummelling him 😳 and it lasted for 4 seconds. At least, till Rico managed to get away.

Yes I am hoping it keeps him in line, and with a bunch of other cockerels coming along, it’s going to be a long summer for P. I will be happy once I get them all sent to camp. I am thinking 16 weeks - Rico is 11 weeks and I don’t see him big enough to process so I know the others wont be at 14 weeks.
How many cockerels do you have? Do you have a way to separate the ones who won't be staying, so that they won't aggrevate both Mr. P and the ladies? Or will Mr. P's presence keep them under control? Never having had a cockerel, I am curious how it will all play out.

Emergency med kit discussion, I am putting together multiple posts on this subject because I think it’s important and maybe (hopefully) easier to follow along.

Bgmathteach opened a discussion on what to throw into the emergency chicken kit.

I counted three times. 7, 7, 7. ? Where is Coco? 🤔. I went to check the yard and there she was, digging to Australia again! But she’s in the coop now.
I need my inhaler, after chasing her back! View attachment 3554756
I have a new way of counting now that the chicks are getting almost all the same size

4 white chicks
1 grey chick and
6 black chicks ( takes into account Penne, Tippy, Rico and the 3 school chicks 😁)
1 Martin/a
And….
3 fluffy silkies 😊

Then I start on the grups…..

Well I am sure about Rico, Penne and Diamond (one of the dark school chicks); there are a couple of the splash/white chicks that I am sure are boys, 2 for sure. And then there is Martin/a is s/he a pullet??

So…

5 that I am sure of. I will keep them all together until they start to cause trouble. I was planning on freezer camp at 14 weeks but going by Rico who is 11 weeks now, I will likely wait till 16 weeks maybe even 18 weeks.

That will be another 11 weeks for the school chicks to reach 18 weeks; Penne would be 20 weeks by then. Since I am not planning on processing Rico or Martin/a 22 weeks for them is a non issue.

If they cause issues I can pen them in the Summer House, and actually was thinking of roosting them in there anyways starting tomorrow - just at night.
