Brr chilly here today it’s 4C, but it’s sunny at least. Poor Sophia came out but she sure is shivering.

I think Sharpie is starting to moult also now. She was hanging out under the sweeter heater earlier - smart bird!

Wow great job there that is a wonderful playground for them 💕😌

I guess my wee chooks wouldn’t be able to use the treadle feeder then, most of mine are so small.
No you can use it but you would make some adjustments for their size and weight. I believe the minimum weight for the kind I have is two pounds, so really small bantams under that wouldn’t be able to use it. You can also put or add on a wider step so they can get closer, for instance there’s a wide duck step available, and others have added a strip of wood. Both of these changes make it somewhat less rat-proof because treadle feeders work by distance and weight but I think it’s still better than an open feeder. I don’t have rats (yet) but field mice.

What I’ve done is adjusted the stepping weight down by moving the springs in a notch so they don’t have to stretch as much, and I’m gauging the pullet’s ability to reach in, the distance from the treadle to the bin, which is good as is for Tedi and Diane Ida. I haven’t got Anna to peck in there yet, she’s afraid, but she is standing on it. Then I’ve put a little flat stone under the treadle so that it will bottom out correctly and not float.

Mornin! My mom is taking me to a bake sale here in a bit. Hopefully I can get some cinnamon free goodies.

Gave the ladies a whole corn stalk. They mostly wanted out of the gate! Not even afraid that the dog was in the backyard.

Here they come!

The first three, surprisingly Ash wasn't the first out. Granted, she stole the piece of bread I had in my hand so I guess she was busy...
Nice! Did they get to play in the yard today?

This is Babe, all grown up, she should be laying any day now.

Omg, Mr. P's hair do is really something else!!! I cant seem to stop staring, lol 🥰🐓❤️

In that same time frame a hawk came down and attacked Butters again, who squirmed away, and as it hopped over to get her against the fence I ran towards them and all the hawk did at first was flap-jump up onto a chair back. It was so hungry it really had to decide before flying away. I appreciate their lives and what they have to do, and they are very cool, but not in my back yard.

I like the looks of your chicken areas and yard. The terracing does dictate how you can arrange it but it looks nice and big enough. Raccoons - you need at least very good wood framing or welded wire and hardware cloth. I think @rosemarythyme and others have basically chain-link fencing around their complex. Raccoons have nothing but time to figure out where your weaknesses are. And they are strong. On Facebook I know of someone who put hardware cloth all the way up the side of their run, not just three feet, because they lost chickens who were roosting up high but near the wall.

If you can run electric fencing around just your chicken terrace that will help, because it is a deterrent to further investigations.
OH NO! Speak of the devil. Glad you were there to intervene. How did it pin her against the fence with the netting in the way?

My covered run (L shaped, but the larger portion is 7’x14’) is a wood frame that is completely hardware cloth enclosed (the REAL goal was to make it rat proof- the other pests were excluded by definition). They’re super safe in there, although they act like prison inmates banging on the front door to get out in the mornings. 🙄

Awww, if she wernt molting, I'd pick her right up and snuggle her. I'd love to see a pic of your sweeter heater set up. I'm in CT and the cold doesnt seem to stop them too much, but they all like to do a mild molt this time of year so a sweeter heater might not be a bad idea to have layin' around just in case. Nice lookin' chickens btw 🐓❤️
