Had a little scare this week. Came home Monday from work to find Rosie making a terrible wheezing/whistle sound both inhaling and exhaling. Her mouth wasn't open so I figured it was either her lungs or she had something in her nose? Used some vetrx on her and in the coop, when I checked before i went to bed it was all quiet. Bill said she did it a bit on Tuesday again, but was fine yesterday. Whatever it was seems to have resolved. 🤷

Seems again today that I have to teach the finer arts of roostering to Mr. Wyandottey. Tidbit (take the girl out to dinner)
Go take her dancing (but let her lead for once!)
Do not attack her with violence or empty promises!
She’ll let you know when and if she’s ready!
And always trust the wisdom of your chicken daddy! No exceptions!

Fluffy Butt Acres Synopsis 1/7 - 1/11

Last week's synopsis thanks to RC: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...es-stories-of-our-flock.1286630/post-28289758

It is COLD in almost all of USA. Everyone stays warm! You are going to find lots of winter whining posts this week. With lows been in the 20s, I am going to whine about it too. I did not move to the south for this kind of weather. However, Rebecca reminded us that at least it's good for pest control. Another week and maybe it will get warmed up.

And @GregnLety 's "little Red" is in caption contest if you want to contribute: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...es-stories-of-our-flock.1286630/post-28308470

Little Silvie still won’t even look at her nicely wrapped perch.
She has tucked herself away in the nest box for the night.
I feel she is better off in there than roosting on bare metal when the temperature is going as low as is forecast. So I am going to leave her be until after the arctic weather moves on.

Am I the only one who had a pen for the new arrivals? Though to be fair to everyone else having the barn it was easy.

But, I think everyone forgets that when they bought their first chickies they were tiny and didn’t require huge housing. Then as they became larger you ‘figured it out’ and built a facility that worked for you.

And I think all of you did an amazing job! And I am happy to say I have borrowed many of your ideas 😊
Coop was here. Given 4 birds, 2 POL pullets (Silver being one of them), a hen and a cockerel.

Edit: lost other pullet and hen.

Built a pen in the garage for 1st chicks using chicken wire and a twin bed frame. 17 chicks....they were out growing the confinement (not the physical size) at 2 weeks. Loosed in the garage. Moved to the coop with Silver at 6 weeks. Silver in garage with them (not broody), allowed out every morning. Buster (roo in coop) allowed out every afternoon. Chicks allowed out with Silver for short periods, in gradually increasing numbers, until Silver sounded an alarm, cocked her wings out parallel to her body and ran in an arc around the chicks...who then ran for the bush. Silver took up station just outside the shelter, watching back toward the patio....where a deer walked around the corner. She demonstrated she was willing to care for the chicks, so all moved back to the coop. She promptly abandoned them to Buster and resumed avoiding his attentions by staying on the roost. Food and water got put on top of the nest boxes so she could eat in peace. I knew almost nothing about chickens then.
