Poor Marty has been wattling around for a week now, she is not feeling very well.

I drained about 40ml of fluid from her abdomen, and she continues to leak which is good. Even now her abdomen has shrank down, thankfully.

After I gave her some Sulphatrim to ward off any infection and to help her heal. I may give her some Tylenol tonight to help her feel more comfortable. She has worried me for a couple yrs now since she started laying those soft eggs.

Anyways I found a very good article on Ascitis in Poultry:

Well, Castor and Bijou are back from the vet. Both fixed, so hopefully no more going on rambles, Castor, and Bijou won't be drawing in other toms. Revamped patio to hopefully keep chickens out of kitty food. Bijou is out and about and chickens are freaking. They'll adjust. Sherlock went with to pick up. Castor was NOT happy (growly gus) until he was home, then all good, again.

I am happy for all my pets to be ‘sports models’ - less drama and less risk of them wandering, fighting and lower risk of cancers.

So I bit the bullet and got the Wheaten Marans Rooster from my beekeeper friend who shows chickens. This poor soul would have been brought to the chicken market because he’s not SOP. Has some brown dusting on his chest. Sweetie pie who she called Dusty. I think the only reason she still had him was because he’s so sweet.

Quarantine then introduction.

So help me, another rooster. At least I free range and they have lots of space.

I will have to look for or hope for more hens. My ratio is off. But I did want more than just RIR cockerels/roosters in my flock genes going forward.

Also, lost a Barnevelder last week. Didn’t post because I was so mad. Pretty sure it was a dog but can’t prove it. Happened when I was walking my dog so I wasn’t here to see it all go down. Pretty sure it was the one that was laying those beautiful speckled eggs for a few days, because none since. 😭
So sad - very sorry to hear this.

Lots of worry with our dear pets. But it’s the risk we take if we want out lovely feathered friends.

:hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

And kelly wants to keep her horses in Canada 🇨🇦 anyways!

At this point in time I want to keep Truly in her stall! At night!

At least she goes in her stall to do her business! No messy barn floor from horsey doodoo.

Just messy chicken doodoo!!!

Sir Surely (nee Shirley) Egg Update

Went over today (day 8) and checked eggs.

Woohoo! We have babies!

6 eggs have definitely got good moving chicks, 4 are maybe’s. And at least one was a fridge egg!

And the other 10 eggs are non-starters as far as I see.

We will check again on day 12 or 14 and remove any that are non-starters.

Then day 18 do a last check and lock down.

So I am hoping for at least 6 chicks maybe 10 (though I think 6 realistically).

As I said, Wonder Woman! Strong and brave. !

Yep walking in slippery cecal poops takes skill! Which I have in limited supply these days!

Well had some drama tonight putting chooks to bed. As you mostly all know Cayenne likes to fly up on my back/shoulders/head…. Face…. To get away from the others - and tonight was particularly bad, Someone attacked Cayenne who then flew up into my face, scratching my face and cutting my lip. I knocked her to the ground (she’s fine), I then picked her up and put her on the ledge, Ruth then attached her and she tried again to fly up on me.

I grabbed Ruth and told her “yep sister you get to go fight for a spot with the old gals - good luck” and plopped her in HH-A with the older ladies.

Then I put Cayenne back on the ledge and Raven attacked her - at this point I am ready to put all three of them in the freezer.

So I grabbed Raven and told her also - good luck in here - have fun, and put her in Hen House A. I then had a few choice words for Cayenne who was still trying to fly up on me. But with my lip bleeding and my face scratched I was fed up. I told them all figure it out, locked up and left them in the dark.

Came to the house and cleaned up my scratches with betadine. Did you all know that there is a mouth rinse made with betadine you can get? It’s good for cankers and scratches from chickens on your lip… heaven knows what sort of bacteria their claws harbour!

And another thing that’s going to stop is this door sitting with Mr LC and Tippy.

And the brats who still sit on the stall walls. Gonna stop this weekend. Kelly is fed up!
