Official Squatch Watchers

Are BCs prone to it? Poor Black Betty. I feel sorry for my silkies (who found her), I just went out and gave them a bunch of mealie worms...
Yes! Barred rocks too.

It is one reason why I do not give them corn scratch or high carb treats

Ah, hepatic lipidosis. Fat cats get that.

She wasn't at all fat, though. I just recently cut back on the amount of scratch I was letting them have, because I've been reading about that. None of my chooks are fat. Still, I'm way cutting back to just a handful or two once a day. I was giving them a few handfuls a couple times a day.

Hope I didn't kill her with kindness....

You guys. :(

One of my chickens died today, for no apparent reason. I've never had this happen before (don't worry, it wasn't Flower. It was Black Betty, and she was one of my most unfavorite chickens; she never was social, and never acted like she liked me. But still, I raised her from a day old chick, and it's sad).

I know chickens die suddenly, sometimes. She was in my first batch of chickens ever. They all just turned a year old almost to the day. She was a mottled bantam cochin and was acting totally normal (they all are), good weight, eating and drinking, active, was on her roost last night and out this AM. When I came home I let the chooks out in the backyard (it's 92 out right now, very hot) and they were all out except the silkies were clucking under the coop and didn't come out. I went to see and she was there in the corner, stiff and dead.

Do you think it was heatstroke? Or a heart attack? There were no external marks (my coops/runs are like Fort Knox, no predator could get in). Her crop was empty, her vent was normal, no signs of eggbound, abdomen was normal, comb/ wattles purplish and sunken in. Her one leg was kind of kicked out. That's it. Just dead. Plenty of food and water.

I just buried her. My hubby was too skeeved out t go anywhere near me (freak!) but he did dig me a hole. I don't need sympathy, I'm OK really. It's just weird. Did any of you guys ave this happen before?
I lost my first 2 boys in a very similar manner. Everything was fine all day. It was very hot out but they get ice water in those conditions.
Went to do bed checks and both boys were dead on the floor. They all like to roost in the damn rafters so my best guess was maybe they had a little tiff over territory and heat stroked. One was right under the roost the other was over behind the waterer.
Purpleish combs like you saw but not a mark on them. I looked them over really well to see if they had fought. Nothing. I even considered poison but I had young chicks at the time and no one else even seemed sick. Didn't lose anyone else like that. No idea what it was.
I did install a screen door after that to give them better ventilation on hot days.

@pitbullmomma the purple comb points to heart problems usually big bodied birds are more prone. I'm scared to death I'm going to find Lulu's Alfred Hitchcock looking butt stiff one day. I'm glad it wasn't Flower, but it stinks it was anyone. Don't be too hard on the hubs, mine was ready to thump Deuce in the head because he was convinced insides were escaping and the kid was suffering....oy and double vey.:he

comb/ wattles purplish
usually purple/blueish is heart failure.... lack of blood to extremities.. I had one I opened up and the side of the heart had blown out.. but it was a cx meat mutt mix I am working on.

I’m so sorry Cindi! :hugs
Remember Margaret died suddenly, I found that her liver was mush with a big clot stuck to it.
Even IF Black Betty wasn’t your fav, she was still one of your babies, and of course it’s a shock and makes you sad at the loss.
Sending you love:hugs
