I should look back and remind you what you said about Raven! You said that she’s gonna be trouble, but I knew that at first glance at her. Even Raven wasn’t your first choice of names either. But she sure is a special hen now, isn’t she?!
Yes she is a special hen, I will not deny that. I did say as a spunky chick she was going to be trouble. Any hen that announces she is going to lay her egg 30 minutes or more before she even makes it to the nest to lay is trouble. The girls she has thrown off the roost because she chose not to sleep next to them know she is trouble. The wild birds she religiously scares away from the yard know she is trouble.
Look at this face, you are staring at trouble. I love her, but she is trouble and that is part of what makes her special.

And she has wattles - she is splendid trouble.

Hmmmm, are you secretly Elvira or Morticia? I'm sensing an obsession with black....black cats, black chickens.....
I do find black cats and black chickens to be exceptionally beautiful
I love Merle’s eyes so big and expressive
I also think black chickens are really beautiful. For a long time the only black chickens I saw were harcos, a type of black RIR we have that are not especially pretty. Later I saw pictures of Australorps on the internet and found them striking. But the black hens featured on this thread have really caught my eyes. I fell in love with little Bella†, who left too early. I think Dorothy is stunning, and Raven so special. And Lilly the Ironbeak who passed before I started following 🖤. Merle isn't a striking or elegant beauty but I to my eyes she is very beautiful. I'm so happy I got a black chicken in the hatch, and even more that it's very probably the bantam of the lot.
Nope, I put a stop to the house laying and she resorted back to the porch. So she will set on the porch this time around. I know what mom is thinking in letting her hatch. Really it is grandma who wants her to hatch again. Her health is declining steadily, she does not know it, but some of the tests they are doing is looking for cancer. She has been in congestive heart failure now for 15 years, that is also worsening at a rapid speed since the stroke. Yes, she still can drive us crazy half the time. The chickens seem to be one of the few things anymore that make her truly happy, especially the mommas and babies. I think it is terrible timing for me to have a hen hatch. I do not know or honestly think that she will be able to see them hatch next year. I pray that I'm wrong, but this steady decline is alarming.
I admire you so much for the way you take care of your Grandma. Four generations of strong minded women is not often seen. I think doing this hatch for her is a beautiful gesture. If you're feeling adventurous you could even let her name one or two chicks.
She seems to have great clarity in what she wants and just goes for it.
There is no evidence she has become top of the pecking order (she isn’t even laying yet) - she clearly defers to Maggie and Diana on eating and when to go in or out of the Chicken Palace and where to forage. But she will do whatever it takes to get that roost spot!
Bernadette has always had a solid spirit- brave as a bear. It's to your credit that she is so strong on her legs now.

It's raining steadily today. The chickens are unhappy and I will do taxes and accounting inside.

@ManueB My guess is Rebecca will let her decide on a few names and I second that she's a caring sweet lady taking such good care of her grandmother ❤
