I have a sad situation with Eli.
She lost her balance and fell off the roost in the night. This morning she is clearly having trouble walking.
I don't think she is egg bound this time.
As you can imagine I am devastated. I will swab for Marek's, it has to be considered a possibility.

Farewell

My Ginger left us and went to chicken heaven, in the morning of April 24th, 2023. She was 25 months old. She stayed with us for her first 17 months and was the unquestionable alpha hen.

I am very fortunate that this is the first time I lost one in my 25+ months of chicken keeping, if she even counts as we rehomed her 8 months ago. (knock on wood)

We picked up Ginger and 7 other babies on March 12th, 2021 at our local feed store. I am pretty sure they got their chicks from some big hatchery.

Ginger was a freedom lover. She got out of the fence all the time.
View attachment 3480073

She is the best with treats and a great forager.
View attachment 3480065
View attachment 3480067

She's named Ginger because we were not creative with names and she was the darkest among all golden buffs.

She was not overly sweet. But when she wants to be on your lap, she really let you know and demanded to be picked up.

In August 2022, Inky was bullied very bad by Ginger (perhaps because Inky molted after going broody) so we sent Ginger to my friend.

Goodbye, Ginger, we will always remember you. We will keep talking about you as the escape artist. I am glad that you are pain free now.

Thank you Manue - very helpful!

I had the middle plant for years in a pot, way over due to be planted. Also why it looks more brown, is much taller and has flowers (the green stuff) with it.
There another bush in the ground about 10' away we planted last year. :)
Now to find grapes and some thimble berries!

Oh and the blueberry i planted is in this photo from last week. You can see its pot is broken and full of grass and flowers.
We are so far behind growing season here, even the grass hasn’t grown much. Thankfully hahaha

I am very surprised that my chickies will spend so much time digging through the fallen leaves! They have done a better job than I could do clearing out some of the brush areas. They scratch and dig up the old debris and loosen up the weeds for me to remove!

Thanks girls!

ooooh, 2 blueberry bushes! I think @BY Bob just got some. I want to have a small blueberry patch at some point, 8-9 bushes. Alas, that is on a long list of things to be done!

Just a word of warning: make sure you have protection for them! netting fencing, something...or you will not get any. Wild birds....your feathered friends/helpers, etc! Blueberries are almost as well loved as chicken by wildlife!
