Beautiful chicken tax, and thank you for putting that so well... I’ve seen pro-chemical solution posts create some awful backlash in threads. And the sheer absurdity of thinking a horse de-worming medication will cure a virus... this is why I can’t get access to needed medications here anymore. (Maybe they should restrict bleach and those laundry pods too?) Now, off to go out and get some back tax photos of my own! What COVID is demonstrating is the real danger the internet poses. Anyone can pose as an expert on the internet. Any rumor false or true can be spread in a second.
You marry this kind of accessibility to information with the desperation brought on by fear and exacerbated by distrust of the government and scientists associated with the government, you wind up with people drinking bleach and taking goat dewormer.
Then add in a lack of basic knowledge of biology as it is not well taught in schools. A dewormer effects multi-cellular organisms. A virus is smaller than a cell. The dewormer works in the intestinal tract. The virus infects the respiratory system and the blood. There is no mechanism for one to even reach the other let alone effect it. This is not high level science yet it is escaping people.
Conspiracy theories are one thing but science is science. This magnificent world wide web can be used for so much good, bringing chicken lovers together for an example, but it also allows nonsense to persist and spread as if it is real science. Just sad. Education is the key to ending things like this but we no longer train people how to think critically and examine facts for themselves, if we ever did.
