I use one of those lights that mount to your head. Made by Energizer. Has two white leds and one red led and a switch to chose one or the other. I find i can use the white leds to get there and then I switch over to the red when I'm with the chickens. I can see pretty well but they can't so they stay put . Also it leaves both hands free :)

I tried one & found it awkward. Too much shadowing when I moved. As I've gotten older I've found I really need strong bright white light & no shadows or I can't see a thing.

If it does work for you then you got use what does.
A couple more thoughts. The one I have is a low powered 50 lumen (chosen for that reason) unit with an adjustable (vertical) lamp. It provides enough lite so i don't trip over stuff and when I have the beam set high (not down on my feet) I don't have as much trouble. I had tried a brighter unit and found it more difficult (it was disorienting me) I think the low power keeps some of your night vision. I got this unit to check on the chicks at night when I got home and not disturb them so much. The red light was an accidental discovery as it happen to come with the light. I found with the red light the chicks could still hear me and fret but they longer would move on or from their perch. Also used this when boxing a bird to move to another coop. They can't run when they can't see ha ha , What ever it takes to keep from stress them :)

Glad to here the merge went well. :) :)

I use a headlamp all the time. But DUH! Never thought of a red one for working with the chickens at night. Great idea!
Me too. My headlamp gets lots of use but I never thought about red. No doubt this one will need replacing eventually and I will try for red.

Another head torch fan here. I use it every day.

I found it a bit disorienting at first - and still do if I turn my head suddenly! But I got used to it and now I can't imagine life without it. In the winter I use it almost every morning and every evening - not just with the chickens but it extends my outside working hours. This weekend I found myself hunting branches for the Chicken Palace perches and of course left it too late so there I was out in the woods after dark and it was great!

Hmmm sounds good! I'm going to get one and give it a try.
I found a cheap one that slips onto the brim of my baseball style cap at the two dollar shop. It is very handy and the cap keeps my hair, rain and bugs out of my eyes at night.

What a nice way to meet them all in their environment. Ruby looks really good. Thanks for sharing this moment with us. It is especially appreciated here in cold Winnipeg, -8°F here right now. That's too cold for C to calculate.

🥶

They don’t call it Winterpeg for ‘nothin. There’s a good reason I’m a west coast girl... saw some frost on the ground today  nasty stuff, and there was a thin coating of ice on the smaller buckets of water... brrrr. Too cold for me!
