The Building of a Community

I can't locate a specific moment when it happened but sometime in the past 12 months this little thread of stories about my goofy hens became a large community. On 10/21/19 this thread had all of 174 pages. That is after having been started roughly 10 months before. In 12 months we added 1,911 pages.

When I think about how apprehensive I was about starting my own thread I just don't know why. I had been on BYC for years but had not started a thread. Thinking back on it now it was the story of Nardole the Brave that brought me here. It lead me to follow Dona Worry and her thread Chickens of the Sunshine Motel. (It is also responsible for Mrs BY Bob's obsession with polish Chickens and brought us Phyllis) She inspired me to try this.

Look where we are now.

This has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I treasure each and every one of you and live to hear the stories of your flocks. All the joy and tragedy we have shared together. I feel so blessed.

Not to mention that this led to Sydney being able to hatch this year! Such a gift.

I don't know why I am feeling so reflective this morning. Maybe it is the fog, leaves, or last remnents of summer bringing it on. I can't say.

:hugs :hugs to you all, each and every one of you.
I am sure I speak for many of us that are enormously thankful that you started it and have held us all to wonderful standards of caring and thoughtfulness (oh and CHICKENS!!!).
I dont engage in any other social media (is this social media?) but am loving this group of friends and our collective flock of chickens.
It keeps me sane in these crazy times. 🥰🥰

Happy Friday!

Mine just yell when they hear me regardless of whether they can see me. And sometimes they simply yell.
Someone, I can’t figure who, but I think it might be Dotty(!) has a sort of half-crow going. Kind of a ‘cock-a-doodle’ but missing the final ‘doo’.
That's what Lilly does. Cocka........ I am determined to get video. I think this does mean that Dottie is likely your alfa hen.

I count this as social media. I do not do any other social media as well. Who has time with 10 pages to catch up on here every day!

Hi yall! Well just a bit ago I almost had a chicken tragedy! I went out to feed the flock and walked upon Claire trapped by her neck under the gate! I thought she was dead but she moved so I hurried and opened it and she got up! She was shaken up pretty badly and she was bleeding from her comb and wings from struggling! I brought her out of the coop and put her in the bunny yard after I held her for awhile so I could finish the feeding and watering ....she sat in there for awhile and walked some too... but as it started to turn dark she looked ready to get out so she could go to bed so I carried her to bed and placed her on the top roost... it looked as if Rosemary wanted to be near her.. she jump up there quickly and was trying to get under Maggie so she could get next to Claire❤... but before anyone went to roost... no one would go into the coop because they wouldn’t dare walk through the gate of death!! I had to carry them one by one and the ones I couldn’t catch I had to herd with the rake! Chickens are smart! They knew something horrible happened there and they knew to stay away!
This is the gate she was stuck under... it is usually propped open and I couldn’t imagine how it shut on her neck like that.. but I figured out that she was running from Trump and ran under it and pushed it shut😳
It won’t happen again! I zip tied it open!
Oh, and I knew she was running from Trump because he was the only one that was stuck in that yard.. View attachment 2383654
This is awful, I wouldn’t have realized that could happen. Chickens are like little kids, you have to keep one eye on them all the time!

What a motley crew I have, One box of raisins, and all the bird stand around waiting. (They know what's in that box) But Beetov-Hen takes initiative, and pecks at the box trying to pull it out of my hand. (Raisins don't last long around here):clap:lau
My Aurora would just eat the box.
