Question
I'm not sure that Queenie is eating any of the free-choice grit that I put out for her in the brooder. She is eating the 18% All Flock dry and also made into mash, and some treats - a little scratch and a couple of peanuts broken up. I smoothed the grit bowl over and I don't see any digging in it. Should I put some in her food? I haven't checked her crop in two days, I can do that later tonight.
She lets me clean her beak with my finger when there's mash stuck on it and she hasn't wiped it all off, and let me gently stroke her under her chin / front of her neck on those feathers today too.
Thanks. I was wondering if she had a clue because I believe she was free-ranging with supplemental feed when the caretaker had her, and I bet he didn't provide grit because she didn't need it. When I've pointed it out to her, holding the bowl in front of her, she'll take one and taste it and let it drop, and sort of look like "I've seen this - no good."You can put the grit in her food, that’s what I do.
I am tempted to help Maggie - she seems to get more and more of them every day! But it is suddenly really warm so I am not going to rush it.I will admit, I was helping Roostie with his head feather preening... oh, the mess he made of my trailer! Feather sheath bits everywhere, luckily I have officially given up on cleaning until spring. Too much mud, too much poop, too cold, not enough water, not enough room. I brushed them off the blanket on the chair though. He sat and happily let me fluff his feathers for him.
She will eat it when she feels she needs it. Just have it available.Question

Good to know. Thanks for clearing it up!I could see them, they just wouldn’t open. I could open them in a web browser though.
I am easily swayed. It's not a real strength of mine avoiding chickens. Just ask Sansa.Careful, Bob. I do believe she has you hooked.![]()
