😢 I made the decision today that the Meloxicam is not enough to help Peanut live a good chickeny life. She really can't move, or doesn't want to move much, it must be too uncomfortable, and there is no promise of recovery from cancer, things will be getting worse, and quickly I think. So I'm taking her to the vets tomorrow (turns out they don't do weekend house calls). She hasn't wanted to leave the nestbox today, at least through 4 o'clock when I had to leave to work, and I don't want to leave it until she is suffering even more.

For those of you who have done this, and those who haven't, I'd appreciate your thoughts on travel companion(s) for Peanut - I brought Butters (a calm hen) with her as a companion on her treatment visit previously. Do I do that again, with Butters, or maybe everyone, so there's less loss of company on the return trip, or take her there by herself, with no one (which doesn't seem right as far as how I did it last time)? And then later, if she is in a box, maybe, put her somewhere in the run back home, where they can see her, say goodbye, or know she has died? Or is it better for them if she just disappears and doesn't leave the box?

Sorry, but only you know your birds. And that decision is yours and yours alone. My concern is for Peanut and how she’s doing and feeling.

A rabbit in peril...?

My friend has a doe (female rabbit) named Charity. She recently had a litter of eleven kits.

Now just what is the problem here?

You see the healthiest litters are of 3 or 4 kits. Now with eleven there will be always someone missing out on it. I received a call from my friend saying that hey, I have a rabbit that's dying of malnutrition, another two have already died of that kind of thing. I agreed to take the rabbit. He's sitting in a box next to me, wrapped in some spare rabbit fur and I'm feeding him rabbit formula (goatmilk + whipping cream) and he seems to be perking up.

phew. But if any of you know what else to do to help this young kit, please pipe up.
What's happening with that baby bunny? just wondering if the wee thing made it.

It was posted in error - I am saving it for Pony Sunday. I so rarely get a chance to post for Pony Sunday, let me have that!

Edited to add: Ooops. Different bunny. I really should just go back to bed and start today over again.

Ok everyone, they are almost 5 weeks now. Owly is a Americauna or fancy word for Easter Egger. There was some suspicion a week and a half ago about her being a boy. She does not act it and I cannot see any boy traits on her yet. She is my favorite, willingly seeks me out to sit on me so that probably does mean she is a male but there is hope. What do you all think.

I really don't see anything on those chicks that says Roo - they look like Pullets to me :)

Water is my bane - my dug well at the barn would run dry in the summer, I finally had another well put in. But we didn’t swap out the underground piping, and I know I have a slow leak that I will need to deal with.

I need to dig up the water line; replace it and backfill.

But many times I have had to run a hose from the house to the barn I’m summer

I was just asking myself that yesterday - Penelope, Dorothy, Rico, Penne... all flaked out in the sun sound asleep. I had to go and wake them and move them into the shade I was so worried about them!

Mind you the white chicks were also doing the same thing :)
Every time I read that name in your posts, I think yelling in my head “ALL RIGHT RICO!” :idunno

I haven't read ahead, so other may contradict what I am about to say - but ultimately, do what you think is best from all of our suggestions.

1) Chickens mourn. I think it is VERY important that they know she has passed - I don't think the 'just disappearing' is good at all.

2) You are in sort of a dilemma as far as 'traveling companion's because you have exactly 4 hens. If you take 1 with Peanut, they will be alone on the trip home - when, I am sure, they will be in grief. If you take 2 with Peanut, that will leave 1 home alone the whole time; also, imo, not ideal. I suggest 1 of the 2 following options.
A) If someone else can do the driving, hold Peanut on your lap. She knows you and is comfortable with you - and it will probably, in a sad way, be comforting for you, too. When you get home, do let them see her passed, so they can grief and 'pay respects', and, most importantly, know for sure she has passed.
B) Take them all. And let them all see Peanut as she passes (if the Vet will allow it. Let them be next to her when they give her the muscle relaxant or whatever prior to the actual euthanasia, so they see her pass calmly), and be next to her - both for Peanut's sake and for theirs.

:hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs
You are a very strong woman, CB. I am in tears right now, and I never actually met Peanut in person. It is a very hard situation - but you are doing the right thing. My thoughts are with you and all the girls.
