You should assume you have foxes and have just never seen them. They are one of the most adaptable species around and live in all sorts of habitats. They are extremely happy living in inner cities and suburbia because of the abundance of food.WOW! That is one terrific safety build! Way to go! We get occasional strolling suburban coyotes down our street displaced from the mountains behind us, raccoons, possoms, even a stray rabbit once, but never had a fox. Your fox was pretty -- though I'm so happy he gave up on your flock!
Please, do not feel horrible. None of this is yours or Teddy's fault, it is not I promise. Chicks are fragile, I have learned over the years not to expect them all to make it to adulthood. Difficult hatches or hidden issues we cannot see internally can claim them very young. And some, well, some of them pass for no rhyme or reason that first week. I want to thank you. It had been over a year since I last had chicks. I had broody's but I kept breaking them. Things had gotten so difficult and depressing since this past September that I forgot even some of the most simple joys with the chickens. It is still tough, we finally got grandma's living room and kitchen 99% done. Now we have 3 bedrooms to do. All 3 just as bad as the rest of the house. I do not care how happy you are, a day down there you come home feeling depressed and sad. It has been dark when we get home so my chickens are already on the roost, no snuggle time with them so what is left to do to improve your mood? Not much really as I have been so tired it is eat and pass out dreading the next day. Not anymore. I have those happy contented little peeps greeting me as soon as I walk in my room. Just the sound of them instantly relaxes me and brings a smile. The camera does not capture it where they are afraid, but they play with me. I can put my hand in the brooder and tap my fingers and it is a game to them. They come charging in to bite my fingertips and hop all over my hand. Adele demands to be held. You saw the picture of her asleep in my hand last night. I was held hostage by that chick for 10 minutes. She was sleeping and I did not move to put her back until she woke up. Never disturb a sleeping baby, human or chicken. It was a hard day down grandma's yesterday, mentally and physically due to the horrendous heat. The chickadoo's washed it all away in mere minutes and I went to bed happy and slept like a rock. As soon as I woke up they were still happily peeping. I've already had them all out to cuddle and Adele once again made it up to my shoulder for some snuggle time. I was sad for a minute she was not a frizzle but then I got to thinking it is for the best. We can get brutal winters with frigid temps. I already have to take extra precautions with the silkies to keep them warm, Adele will have a advantage over them and be better off with normal feathers. I am sad I lost little fluff and little curly, but, they have joined Momma hen, jack and Gracie with my grandma. Grandma loved my chickens, I won her over with the silkies and she also loved my blue chickens. Little fluff is in the best of care now and I know she is very happy with chicks to spoil.![]()
I feel horrible, I had meant for you to have fun, but all it has been has been heart break. I know you and I have discussed Teddy and his genetics, I still feel he is not genetically stable. With your loses and my nieces extremely poor hatch rate and her chicks dying, it make me wonder if he is inbred - I have seen this with Arabian horses.
My remaining two are at the 3 week point now - but I am sure leery about keeping one as a Roo for the silkies. Or even hatching eggs from them if they are hens. I will definitely do the gender test to see what they are so I can make a plan for them.
Right now they are sleeping under the brooder so I better get out and give them some cuddles. They are missing their friends I know.

Thanks for the update!FBA chicken synopsis
15 June to 22 june 2024
Link to last week's synopsis.
One of those weeks when the joy of waiting for chicks to hatch, and watching those babies greet the world and grow, mingled with painful goodbyes. @RoyalChick's sweet Babs left too soon, and both @knoturavggrl and @RebeccaBoyd lost chicks.

With the rehoming of the other chicks, the two silkies have decided I make a good roost. The one chick was always very friendly, and Clyde more shy, but even she is now deciding I am good company.I'm creating a monster. I have the brooder set up right beside my computer desk. This way I can look at the chicks whenever I want and they can see me. Adele takes notice when she spots me. She gives me this look that I already know means she wants to be held. If I ignore it, she starts protesting loudly. She will not shut up until I get her out so she can snuggle. She has trained me very well. As soon as she can regulate her temperature more in another week, snuggle time is going to translate to tv time.
They were free ranging them, they had put their dog in its crate by the front door to deter any ‘critters’ but I guess not enough. What worries me is what kind of security did they lack that 10 minutes away destroys all their chicken & duck flock? Whatever came after their old flock will be back for the new fresh flock!
I pray they do take your advice.
