That's a limited selection not to mention most are sold out. Your local breeder contacts sound like more choices ~ or like us, we drove 1-1/2 hrs one way to get what we wanted DNA-sexed from a private breeder. You've got another year to mull over a plan💕 I love all the roos we see but we can't deal w/a surprise cockerel cuz there's no way to find them a home in our suburbs.

Here it’s mostly meat and eggs that people want. It’s only been the last couple yrs that Freys has offered different breeds.

Chickens sure have become popular past few yrs around here.

Same with Jolly, his comb is more pronounced than Holly’s and larger.

His head streamers started coming in around 15 weeks though they could have been coming in before - but since I have been trimming his topknot hard to say, and he started crowing at 18 weeks I think.

But I knew in my heart he was a boy at 2 weeks, he just didn’t stop chirping very chatty. Holly hardly made a sound, and was very quiet.

But once his tail feathers started coming in I knew….. 😞
Yeah, I think I had the Silkies for about 2 weeks and knew he was a boy. It's in their personalities where you just know. I would like to be surprised and wrong though! Oh well, it will simply be an excuse to get more silkies/Bantams. He has to have more girls his size after all.

A couple of snaps of Juniper that she very kindly posed for today. I can not decide which I like better so you get both.

just wait. One will take the decision out of your hands
Thankfully that is impossible, they are kept under wraps in the barn, no place to really get away and hide.

Best they can do is sit in a nest box and try hatching a golf ball! Or nothing like Georgie Girl. I made her stay out in the run all afternoon, when o finally let them in she ran to her nest box and hopped in.

Overnight I make her roost on the ledge with everyone else. Silly girl! Next year she will be better and won’t go broody as much.

The other silkies haven’t gone broody in almost a year. Only Fluffy is laying the odd egg. At least I think it’s her age….

Yeah, people want meat/egg birds but the breeds that lay less eggs live longer/healthier. How many times over the yrs I've known owners mourn a sweet hybrid layer at under 5 yrs & usually from some devastating ailment or worse yet losing them suddenly unexpectedly. From mostly their sad experiences we decided early on to not have hybrid layers. Our chickens were meant to be pets once we experienced what wonderful birds they were w/ more to give than just eggs. Funnily enough, our Silkies have been our best egg contributors.

Synopsis of FBA chicken news
Week up to May 24, 2025

Last week's synopsis is available here thank to @lightm

@BY Bob
The big news from the gang at FBA is that the littles are growing up and becoming independent.
They are really beginning to show Phyllis vibes, but have distinct chickenalities.
Poor Bob is no longer needed to carry them to bed.
His assistance was not needed on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday
Still not needed on Wednesday. Or Thursday. Do we get the sense Bob is missing his transportation duties?!
The littles are out and about.

@notabitail or is it @NotabitaiI
It is sad to see one so young lose his cognitive ability and be unable to tell the days of the week - sharing mugs, two-fers, and Thirsty Thursday all on Friday. He also now seems to have two BYC accounts!
