I can give you some insight on Mr and Mrs Little Chicken and cold weather. Do not let their size fool you. They have normal feathers that stick close to their body, they are built for cold. They will probably tolerate the colder weather better then heat. Remember Momma Hen and her hillside hatch 2 winters ago? Everyone, every single flock member suffered some form of frostbite during that cold snap, some severe. Momma Hen hunkered down on that hillside was the only one unaffected. They do not need a heated coop or barn. They just need to roost in a draft free place, and they will find it trust me. Their size is probably making you think they need extra care just like the silkies. Silkies just need extra protection due to their feather type. They cannot insulate themselves like they could if they had normal feathers. Now, Mr Little Chicken may experience some frostbite to his comb and wattles. Cold weather, big wattles and comb it is going to happen no matter what you or anyone else can do.Whoa Nelly!
I just wish one of my hens would step in a stop the fighting when Mr P and Bert start up.
It is breaking my heart but I can’t have them locked away separately for ever, Bert needs a new home. So far no replies to my advertisement.
If I were home full time I could have two runs for them both, and swap them around for free range throughout the day.
But it would still mean in the winter someone would have to be locked away during the day. As the barn is were they over winter.
If I do keep Mr LC he will be locked in the Summer House during the day. I will need to keep him and Mrs LC in the feedroom overnight it is so cold I am sure it would be too cold for them even in the Hen House B.
I wouldn’t worry if he were in Hen House A with the main flock to cuddle with. But now I am so freaked out with him and Mr P possibly fighting.
Boys boys boys bad boys bad bad boys whatcha gonna do with the bad boys.
It was easy with horses I just gelded them, why are chickens so hard to geld![]()
Now as far as Bert. He is now a idiot pure and simple. I understand protecting Mr. P, he is your top priority. I am ready to do the same with Bubba in his dealings with Randy. I am not getting attached to Randy just yet. I wanted to keep Twig, tried forever to let them work it out amongst each other and thought they came to a understanding until Twig tried to kill Branch and I called it quits. Maybe in the evenings when you are home let both boys out together. If they fight so be it but be ready to intervene if it gets out of hand. They may cool it off after a few days and come to a truce. In the end if they can work it out Bert could end up being the dominant Rooster. Mr P is not young, but not ancient either. He may give way to his son and be happy in the 2nd in command position.
