I used the eggs for the test, the lining of the eggs has enough blood to perform the test. I made sure the eggs were dries for a couple days then put each egg in a separate ziplock baggie with name addresses etc on each bag and ID for each chick - I think I just put down silkie-1 and silkie-2.

I mailed it reg mail which took about 2 days to get to the lab, then 2 days later I had the results.
Last summer I did the test on three silkie chicks - I waited till they were 7 weeks and then used their nail clipped short to get a few drops of blood placed on a special paper card they send you to put the blood drops on. I had to wait till they were 7 weeks as their nails are so tiny. FYI all three were pullets.
Wow, that's is so cool
The price went up to $19 so I don’t want to do this for every chick!! The eggshell was really convenient but you need to be observant to who has hatched with which egg. Since Henny hatched only two eggs it was easy 😊 and as one was frizzle it’s was easy to quickly tell them apart.

My niece wants me to give her more eggs to hatch for her school we’re she teaches. I plan on giving her pure silkie eggs as I figure I can sell them easier. I would really want to have the teacher of the class keep track of the eggs so I can do the gender test on a couple see if they are girls, but that didn’t work last year. So I doubt this year would be any different.
Mh Hm

Thank you for telling all about that!! I'll keep it in mind! ❤️

So your dad got straight-run chicks? Gumbo wasn't intentional, was he? That's the part I don't understand, unless you/he had thought through you'd be raising chickens for meat.

You don't need the proof that you can do it, I don't think. Doing it now won't make it easier later. If your chicken was suffering and you really needed to help them, I am positive you could do it because you care that much and take good care of your chickens. Haven't you been trained on the technical aspects of it also? In your Ag classes, or do I have you mixed up with someone? So you're ready.

I understand that two roos for eight hens is probably too many, and if he has to die then you're making the best use of his body.

Understand it's just hard for me to get to know a chicken here, and then find out he's doomed. We can agree though that he appears to have had a good life with you, as short as it is! ❤️ :hugs
.
My dad got “pullets.” But, there is always that chance that you get a rooster out of the pullet bin, especially from TSC. He had told me as soon as Gumbo started to show the first signs of being a cockerel that he would be good. That was still pretty early on. This was him at about two weeks old I think.

I have been trained to process a chicken. I’ve actually killed six or seven chooks in my lifetime. I do want to eventually raise some birds for meat to help support my family.

Yeah, I wish that I had more hens and a bigger coop, because then I’d keep her forever and ever. But I don’t. I’ve tried to rehome him but no one wants him. Poor thing, he’s pretty nice SO FAR!

And I do understand. He’s been a good rooster, and it’s gonna be hard and weird with him gone, but I do like to think that he’s had a pretty good life with me.

I was on a project up in Cold Lake Alberta once - there is an airforce base there, they would have the fancy dancy military fighter jets flying around landing and taking off all the time, my boss came in one morning all excited because he could see them taking off at night with their engines all fired up. I wanted to go and check it out but no one would go out on the Right of Way (where the pipeline runs) with me, they wanted to go back to their hotels for dinner 😳 they had seen it many times they said. I didn’t feel comfortable enough driving on the R of W at night by myself - not good driving into the ditch in your truck!!!!

No one would take you! Not good work fellas.

I hatched out two silkie x Polish (Mr P) babies in Nov, I did the gender DNA test to get there genders right away. The frizzle is a pullet - Betty. And the other a boy Bert, as long as he behaves he can stay.!

They are 10 weeks now and their mama is still brooding them bless her 💕

Those are caramel coloured feathers not poop btw 😁
They are spectacular. And raised through the winter too. I would have never thought it possible.

When my dad got me the four chicks for Willow, he told me that if I got a rooster, he’d go to Freezer Camp or I need to rehome him. I’ve asked friends if they want him, and no one does.
I also kinda want to prove to myself that if I absolutely need to, I could process one of my birds if they were hurt. I’ve told myself since I got Gumbo that he would be gone. Now he’s almost reached maturity, and I’m pretty sure that around now is when he would be best for meat. So yes, I’ve kinda been raising him for meat.
This shows you have a lot of maturity. I had a blind chicken as a child that my mom had to convince me to let them process. She did make a great soup...but it hurt a lot.
