Not a clue. Happens here too. They mostly seem to get better about clean bums, but there's always 1 who NEVER figures out how to keep it clean and always 1 who NEVER mucks it up. With 20 +/- a bit hens I have a decent sized pool for observation any given year. Twirp, Pear, and Cardhu have never had mucky butts from laying eggs. Silver, and Pippa always seemed to have a mucky butt. The rest
They all seem to have some amount of dirt back there, except for Widget, who hasn't started laying again since brooding, then molting last fall.

The almost 4 year old hens haven't started laying yet (Middle laid a few eggs, then stopped again...?) have varying amounts of poopy butt.

I was just wondering if switching feed might change this? Did anyone ever notice a change in feed changing the amount of poopy butt in their flock, better or worse?

Originally someone picked one of his pin feathers and it bled like a stick pig!!! Blood everywhere, and since then they have pecked at his head constantly. Poor old man 😟

We cannot get blucote here it is banned as a carcinogen (ya don’t go there), so I don’t have anything but an aluminium spray that is shiny when coated on a wound - oh yes yummy for chickens to peck at I am sure!

I about busted gut laughing when the feedmill suggested this foolish ‘redcote’ 💩. I told them “oh ‘yis bye now’ (say that with a Newfoundlander accent), that’s going to go down well with the little savage beasts, I spray that on a bird all that will be left are the bones!”

Guess they don’t know chickens love the colour red!

So I don’t have anything to coat the beast with. Sheesh! If I weren’t so far a drive to the border I would make a run to the TSC down in Niagara and pick up a whole slew of stuff. Oh well….
Mix a little blue food coloring in and spray it on him.

I changed my feed a couple times last year but I didn’t see any changes to their poopy butts.

My theory is that once they start laying and their vent gets ready for laying eggs, the vent ‘softens’ and let’s poopies drip onto their derrière feathers.

I trim up those feathers that are ‘in the way’ of the poopies. Esp after last summers fly strick incident.

Amazing synopsis as always, Manue.
I went out and got photos since yesterday was a nice day, regardless if the ground was wet. I'll show you one for now and I have one saved for Mugshot Monday.
Things aren't looking up for Parm. Yes, you can even see she lost some feathers up in the head area.
