You wanted to see a cross between Larry and Mr P, correct? But Larry is older...a young barred rock would be a good idea, then. And her offspring (by EITHER male) would be sex linked. The males would be barred and the females would not be. Same with any pure silkies. The all black skin will pass to males while females won't get it (or will be incompletely marked).

Now that I think about it, crossing buff brahmas with Mr P could have interesting results. You'd have a good chance of blue, featherfooted Brahma sized beauties, with gold leakage....males could have the leakage extending into the hackle/saddle feathers, too....and be stunningly gorgeous birds...I think... middle of the night ideas...gotta run that through the genetics calculator as now I'm truly curious about it.

Edit: going to have to play with it on the computer. Things I've been able to do with it in the past I can't at the moment. Will need coffee first, too.
Oooo buff x polish beauties! And Lavendar to boot 💕 with legs!

What about a light Brahma? They are a Colombian pattern are they not?

I'll run that when I do the buff. Likely results: blue, partial crested, possibly incomplete Colombian markings (light/partial neck ring). The black tail would still carry through to some degree. Lightly feathered legs.

What the genetic calculators cannot predict is body build. The offspring could be Mr P sized and Brahma shaped or the opposite, or somewhere in between. The reason I mention it is because of Cheetah's offspring. 1st year had 5 at in-laws and 3 here. All the girls built like Cheetah. The 2 boys were split. Both boys and 2 of the girls were from Nellie (brown leghorn). 2 girls from Thing 2, and 2 girls from PITA or Blanche (white sapphires, so leghorn build). 1 leghorn body (Horus) out of the whole lot. ALL the others were hamburg build.

Next round here had 2 more. (Dunno about at the in-laws) Zulu was very much the hamburg build (through lark/indigo) and Shan is the Brahma shape. Whether she will reach their stature or not remains to be seen. I won't see that until next fall as it can take that long for the brahmas to finish filling out.

My point: Mr P has a very different body build from a Brahma. Crosses with any of those would be interesting just to see what the results would be with multiple chicks. We already know there's a bit of odd/unexpected genetics in Mr P from the last summer and the unexpected colorings that showed up. The results of hatching his breedings with brahmas (of any color) could have some surprising results.:caf:popI'm going to be watching with great interest.

I was just thinking that Bert was still rather small. I was trying to remember how big Floyd/Martina was at that age, but can’t remember. He also runs funny, all gangly like. I don’t recall Floyd running like that.

Floyd had a much bigger crest also, though Bert is getting through his first moult right now and his crest is still growing in.

Betty is all her mama other than the leg feathers and only one foot with five toes (polydactyl). Her skin colour has darkened a bit bit I must check her out more closely. If your saying dark skin is sex linked she should be white skinned.

I will know better next time I cross P with the silkies. I will look for dark skinned chicks, those should be male.

That only works if the hen is pure for dark skin. If she's partial, then the baby only has a partial shot at getting it.

I found this article - apparently the Midnight majesty Marans is a sex-link cross between a black copper Marans Roo and BR hen.
Also shows how to pronounce Marans (Muh-ran) - interesting!

Thanks for the link! Made me fall in love with my Sheppy even more! Hubby says we will try to always have a marans in the flock.

Royal Chick

———————-

RC observed a rare occurrence in her Chicken Palace - all her beauties were roosting together. I say they were making a statement regarding the weather - RC also agrees!

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock'

RC has some beautiful eggs, I would feel guilty eating those lovely eggs! So pretty, and seems that Tassels lays a rock hard shelled egg! And it’s a gorgeous purple plum colour - how marvellous is that!

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock'

Look at these beauties RC’s ladies are laying - just lovely.

We all agree that many people these days have no idea where their food comes from…. Meanwhile who knows maybe horses do lay green eggs 😊

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock'

And seems Rebecca is quite smitten with some local Guinea Hens - I too would like some (but I can’t afford a bigger barn!).

DesertValleyChickens

—————————————

Seems that the beautiful Light Brahma Cluckie who was not acting right and seemed ill was noted to have a damaged toe - poor Cluckie! Chickens - they are as bad as kids getting onto scraps and getting injured. But we love them anyways ❤️

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock'

Finally Ms Cluckie is starting to feel better 🥰

Kris5902

—————-

Also dropped in to give us an update on her happenings, seems a racoon is responsible for getting a couple her chooks; and her lovely goat, Arduinna, had a run in with a neighbour’s dog, no one injured there, just some frayed nerves.

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock'

Hope I didn’t miss anyone. Have a great week everyone!
Great job, Pony! thank you.

I am trying to keep up!
But I believe dark skin is complicated. The gene for black skin is not sex linked but the modifier gene is sex linked. And there is a third gene involved and at that point I bow out!

You understand my issue perfectly!
I think if I get chicks then I will fall in love and then it will all be terrible.
If I got a bunch of adults and let them loose I could probably cope, but that seems unethical somehow.
On BYC most people who keep Guineas do so more like free range chickens - they 'coop train' them for a few months.
I dunno. They are pretty and I do need their services!
Maybe what you need is for somebody ELSE to bring their flock over and forage your fields for a little while. Like renting goats! 🤔 "Rent-A-Chicken"....our neighbors did that a couple of summers, thinking it would save them money not feeding them over the winter - they didn't get a cheesy coop with the hens, they already had a pretty nice & secure coop and run from previously having chickens. Hmmm there could be bio-security issues...
