Buff Orp fact sheet

Cold hardy, not overly heat tolerant, hens around 8lbs.

https://www.thehappychickencoop.com/buff-orpington/
You should be fine with the orps. I think we are similar climate wise. Cold nasty winters and miserably hot muggy summers. Other then a few comb tips here and there out of all my flock with frostbite I have never had any problems with any of them. In the worst days of summer with temps 100 and 80% or worse humidity my flock has learned how to take care of themselves. They either hang out in the barn or wade the creek cooling off and fishing.

This week’s news:

Congratulations to two thread participants
who won the “Poultry Paparazzi, a Cell Phone Photo Contest”!!! Beautiful pictures!
@Desertvalleychickens and @CCsGarden

Chick Fever is beginning to seriously take hold. Discussions of breeds, sources, weights of breeds. Big breeds too - Jersey Giants, Hamburg, Brahmas, even Marans. Cross-border exchanges planned for the middle of the night (must include catering). Also Eggs/ Roo / Pullet ratios and ways to influence that (besides asking the hens to choose one way or the other).
BABIES BABIES BABIES BABIES ARE ON THE WAY!!!!

Taxes gone wild! Comedy Corner more like it:
A SHRA tax due situation was immediately recognized and paid by the original SHRA poster. But another poster, without having read ahead (or perhaps so quick on the draw that the first poster barely had time to pay the SHRA tax?), demanded SHRA tax. (Everyone is deputized to collect as you know.) This prompted yet a third poster to demand SHRA tax from the second. Where will it end?
Witness the exchange, this post and the next.

@Sally PB
Something about this picture is most unusual - the lighting, yes, but the bowling ball shape (tail is down) & glint of her back feathers over her very nice floofy floof! https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...es-stories-of-our-flock.1286630/post-27484061

Poor Pip is not well. Seems to have been soft shell eggs that Sally pulled out, and weird material with it (photos).

Seems to be improving. Keep her in isolation or move her out?

Apologies to anyone that I missed here!
Busy week (chatty week). Well done!

Sherlock (thanks to my getting distracted and not watching him closely) managed to get into the coop this morning. No bodies, but feathers everywhere, birds scattered. Several soggy feathered. Currently 3 crammed into one of the smaller nest boxes. Hector and Enigma sheltered in the pea tree hedge. Whiskey and Cardhu in the hedge next to the rose patch. Cumulo in a patch of tall grass behind the coop, Cuckoo and Nimbus in/around the olive tree at the top of the hill. Checked over birds I could catch (included Cumulo to my surprise, first I've ever been able to handly any of the babies). Sherlock is back inside and one of the bags of grass from this summer is now in the coop for some extra warmth, comfort and browsing on.

Bit of a setback on training. Now questioning: would chicks be a setback or training aid? Not sure at the moment. However, will be scattering feathers in the house and working on leaving those alone also.

I'm happy that Sherlock didn't get any of your chooks! Gotta keep an eye on the dogs!

SHRA tax x 2 Chicory already answered RC! Oh well, I guess I have a reason to post some more chicken pics 😂

Double edged nestbox:
The good: the girls seem to absolutely love the nest box. They are laying more often (probably time of year) and all the eggs are now actually being laid in the box! Mission accomplished right?

The not so great: Well, now that Avalon has ample room for her ample fluffy bottom it seems she has decided to start thinking about going broody.

Now my one experience with broodiness was Brownie and she would make that warning growl sound when collecting eggs but she wouldn’t peck me.

Avalon however 🤦‍♀️ she is acting more like Rebeccas description of her crazy broody girl. I had to shoo her off of 12 eggs, that she Fully covered with room to spare, with the egg basket and the. She made a run at my arm that was taking the eggs!

This spring and summer should be fun guys!! 🤣
The summer will be fun?
For me, maybe....
*Shivers at the thought of 117°F heat.....*

Guess who had a butt so poopy she couldn't poo again?

Watching her preen was cool

Chicks in the house - as long as secure/safe when you aren't with them will be a VERY GOOD idea and training tool. When we got our dog as a rescue (8-9 mos. old), he would chase anything that moved. Shortly after getting him, i got chicks, they were in the mud room - like a breezeway - so not in the house. I would spend a lot of time - every chance I got -to hold a single chick and let him sniff. If he sniffed aggressively or licked hard, Chick would be pulled away. I would constantly admonish him to be gentle. When he did gentle licks or sniffs, the chick stayed. I again, would do this every chance I got for about 5 min. After about 1-2 weeks of this (and, yes, I alternated which chick - wanted them to get used to him & not run, either) I brought a couple in the house, laid on the floor, and corralled them in my arms, and would let Elroy come over an sniff. If he got too excited or 'aggressive (i.e. too rough) - I would tell him 'Gentle', if he didn't 'calm down', I would say 'leave it'...and 'sit'. This would get him to sit and calm down - but not get close. It took no time at all really for him to understand 'gentle' and that he needed to be careful with them. If he didn't calm right down, I would scoop up the chicks and away they would go. Granted, I think he was a bit older than your Sherlock is now - but he had absolutely NO training prior to me getting him - none at all. By the time the girls were 8weeks and outside full-time...he could walk right up to them - as they learned to trust him/be comfortable around him - AND he learned to be gentle with them - and that they were 'cherished' by us and to be respected. That summer - if the older girls ran when free ranging and he got too close, the chase instinct would kick in some and we would have to do stern 'NO/Leave it" and pull him back with the leash.

While I don't 100% trust him with the chickens - if I put him in the run with the chickens while I am futzing with the coops and runs (I have 3, he would be in the main run - I might be working in that one, or in one of the other two - which are across the way a bit. Both he and the chickens are good with each other. They will do a 'fast walk' out of his way if he chases a rat or something towards him, but he doesn't chase them, and they aren't freaked out by him.....I would love it if I could trust him while they are free ranging - but he gets excited by something and will take off...so it isn't so much chickens, as him not letting his nose and excitement get the best of him.

long story short: Yes, have chicks in the house - at least for the first couple of weeks, expose Sherlock to them daily with appropriate complimentary or stern commands/reprimands as appropriate, and let him know these great smelling, interesting things are beloved by you and to be 'gentle with', and that they disappear if he isn't good with them...stay longer if he is. A great way to build trust and a relationship BOTH ways. AND: Yes, you chickens will discern the difference between him and a strange dog, so don't worry about that aspect, either. Our chickens clearly know him - but still send out the warning calls if another dog comes onto our property/near the coop.

Well, boys are crowing again. Chia is perched up in one of the olives (@4 feet up) with Nimbus on the ground near her. Enigma is next to Hector just outside the coop. Herded Cardhu back in. Whiskey was carried the first go round (he's now working in comforting Blanche who is the only one still in a nest box. Found PITA and packed her back (she was well hid and not inclined to come out but decidedly damp, including melting the snow under her). Only ones I haven't been able to find: Twirp (no surprise, she's fantastic at hiding) and Shan (she blends in almost as well as Twirp). Mera appears to be building a nest on the floor of the coop UNDER the grass I just added. That could get interesting too. Will check again before we leave, but with boys crowing, at least Nimbus and Chia were craning necks and discussing going to join them.
